Shading the hair

For the hair I start out with repeating the first steps I used on the clothing:
Add the 2 dark colors; add the two light colors; and smudge gently:


Now I grab the retouch tool and set it to lighten RGB with these settings:

I add highlights with the lighten brush where I already put the light colors:

Then I switch to the darken RGB tool with these settings:

and add some shadow on the parting, at the sides and by the neck. I also do some strokes with the brush size set to 2 pixels along the hairlines:

Then I use the smudge tool again and finish off with a few extra light and dark strokes here and there:

I try to drag out some light strokes here and some dark strokes there with the smudge tool - the idea is to give more of a zigzag look than a straight line of light and shadow. Then I add the outline (sometimes I make it darker than others, depends on the hair style):
